On November 28, 2024, the II Regional Tournament “Local Lore Treasures of Our Homeland” was held online, bringing together young experts of Sumy region. The tournament was organized by the Department of Education and Science of the Sumy Regional State Administration and the Sumy Regional Council’s Communal Institution – the Regional Center for Extracurricular Education and Work with Gifted Youth.

On November 21, 2024, faculty members of the Department of History at Sumy State University (SumDU) and students specializing in “Secondary Education (History and Civic Education)” and “History and Archaeology” participated in presentation events of educational projects organized by the Department of International, European Law, and Comparative Legal Studies, as well as the Department of Administrative, Economic Law, and Financial and Economic Security at SumDU.

Open Day at SumDU: Future Students Discover the World of History and Archaeology

On November 2, 2024, Sumy State University held its Open Day, welcoming prospective students and their parents interested in future studies. Among the various academic offerings, the specialties of the History Department drew particular attention. Professor S. Degtyarov, Doctor of Historical Sciences, and Associate Professor A. Honcharenko, Candidate of Historical Sciences, introduced attendees to the unique opportunities in the “History and Archaeology” and “Secondary Education (History and Civic Education)” programs.

NMT Preparatory Courses in “History of Ukraine” Have Commenced

In 2023, “History of Ukraine” was established as a mandatory component of the National Multi-subject Test (NMT). Adhering to tradition, October 2024 saw the inauguration of preparatory courses at Sumy State University (SSU). The esteemed faculty members from SSU’s Department of History have been entrusted with delivering the “History of Ukraine” curriculum to preparatory course participants. The distinguished instructors include Associate Professor N.V. Lobko, Ph.D. in Historical Sciences, and Associate Professor V.A. Nesterenko, Ph.D. in Historical Sciences.

Participation of History Department Lecturers in the Development of Programs for Acquiring Ukrainian Citizenship

In early summer 2024, the Ministry of Education and Science of Ukraine initiated the creation of Working Groups to develop examination programs on the basics of the Constitution of Ukraine and the history of Ukraine for foreigners and stateless individuals seeking to acquire Ukrainian citizenship. Lecturers from the History Department of Sumy State University, Candidates of Historical Sciences, Associate Professors Alla Ivanivna Zyakun and Vadym Anatoliyovych Nesterenko, were included in the Working Groups and actively contributed to the development of the history of Ukraine program, which has now been submitted by the Ministry of Education and Science of Ukraine for public discussion: link to the public discussion.

Participation in the All-Ukrainian Online Forum “Prominent Figures of Ukraine in the Struggle for National Independence (20th – Early 21st Century)”

On 23 August, in celebration of Ukraine’s National Flag Day and on the eve of Independence Day, the Donetsk Regional Museum of Local History organised an All-Ukrainian scientific and educational online forum on the topic “Prominent Figures of Ukraine in the Struggle for National Independence (20th – Early 21st Century).” This significant event brought together museum professionals, local historians, academics, and scholars from various regions of Ukraine, including Kyiv, Donetsk, Dnipro, Ivano-Frankivsk, Chernihiv, Kirovohrad, Cherkasy, Vinnytsia, Odesa, Sumy, Lviv, and many others.

Sergiy Degtiarov has been elected as the deputy chair of the Coordination Council on July 4, 2024.

On July 4, 2024, a meeting of the Coordination Council for the Affirmation of Ukrainian National and Civic Identity was held under the chairmanship of O.A. Boyko, the deputy head of the Sumy Regional State Administration and chief of the Regional Military Administration. During the meeting, Sergiy Degtiarov, a Doctor of Historical Sciences and head of the Department of History at Sumy State University, was elected as the deputy chair of the Council. Participants discussed the regional program for national-patriotic education, its relevance in current conditions, the main aspects of developing patriotic education in educational institutions, and the future work vectors of the Council.
