In 2025, Ukraine launched the project “Preservation of the Jewish Documentary Heritage of Ukraine, Commemoration of Collective Memory, Expanding Knowledge and Access to Archives, and Promoting Intercultural Dialogue”, with financial support from the European Union. The project is aimed at strengthening the preservation, accessibility, and awareness of Jewish documentary heritage in Ukraine.
As part of this initiative, on 29 September 2025, an online training session was held within the framework of the UNESCO “Memory of the World” Programme. The purpose of the project is to enhance the capacity of Ukrainian memory institutions and specialists to work in line with the Programme’s standards and to meet its requirements for nominations.
Representing Sumy region, Professor Serhii Dehtiarov, Doctor of Historical Sciences and Head of the Department of History at Sumy State University, took part in the training.
The main objectives of the online training were to:
-
introduce the “Memory of the World” Programme and its selection criteria;
-
provide practical knowledge on preparing nominations and preserving documentary heritage;
-
share international experience and best practices.
Preserving historical memory is essential for the future of a democratic Ukraine. UNESCO projects serve as a vital instrument for safeguarding documentary heritage as well as a platform for intercultural dialogue and the development of modern cultural initiatives.
